Tommorrow, there will be a special election to fill the state House seat left open by Democrat Charles Young. The district is district 82 located in the center of Lauderdale county (http://www.cmpdd.org/Demographic%20Data%20Charts/House-2002-map.jpg). I am almost certain the district has a black majority because it was held by a black Democrat for two terms by very large margins. The race to replace Young is between Democrat Wilbert Jones and Republican Bill Marcy. Republicans may have been smart to put up a black candidate in a district like this.
Democrats really need to hold this district. Republicans picked up a 36% black state Senate district in Huntsville, Alabama two weeks ago, bringing their net gains since Obama's election in special state legislative elections to a net gain of three, beating us four to one in pickups so far. A loss in this Mississippi district would show for sure that Republicans are far more motivated right now than Democrats.
If anyone here lives in Lauderdale county, Mississppi, take a look at this map(http://www.cmpdd.org/Demographic%20Data%20Charts/House-2002-map.jpg) and see if you live in the district. If you do, please vote for Wilbert Jones and deny Republicans another special election pickup.
